Project Second Sight is the alleged name of a SAP program said to have been active in a black budget venture within the United States government between 1991 and 1995.[1] Online researchers and conspiratorial communities claim it's existence despite no official word from government agencies. It is said to have been studying methods associated with briefly creating a conflux of two timelines or "configurations" for the express purpose of altering public recall of the targeted event and suppressing collective memory. [citation needed]
No official government channels have confirmed or denied it's existence. Project Second Sight is widely considered to be internet folklore and extravagant conspiracy theory.[2] Despite this, it has gained a following online when users began uploading analog media that contains what is purported to be anomalous material consistent with the claims that follow Project Second Sight theories. Materials include VHS recordings, cassette tapes, radio broadcasts and even physical evidence of supposed altered states of being. These events are all centered within a radius covering a portion of the Great Lakes region in the American Midwest.[3]
Background
In 2001 a group of AeroDefense enthusiasts on an online forum - AeroDefense SAP Tracker, unearthed an alleged FOIA request with partially redacted budget line items pertaining to a Project Second Sight.[4] Only screenshots exist of this FOIA request and no one has been able to produce the authentic document despite repeated attempts to contact the appropriate government channels. [citation needed]
Alleged methodology
According to online theory, Project Second Sight was the overseeing body that determined which events would be targeted for a potential "Fold Configuration" where two diverging timelines would be temporarily merged and said event altered. This allowed data, information and even physical matter to be passed between coupled timelines.
Conjecture from those who hold this to be true allege that the program also uses VBI broadcast techniques. [5] — Combined with broadcast signals intended to subconsciously reconfigure the target bodies recall of past event — Vertical Blanking Intrusion analog transmissions that could be picked up by TV broadcast signals or media that was recording within the target area. This purported technique remains a theory and has no substantiated evidence.[7]
The "magnetosphere anomaly" claim
Whistleblowers have come forward claiming to be ex-government officials with SAP level clearance. [6] Their interviews were short, manipulated and hidden behind voice distortion and face veils. One particular indiviual claimed the Project Second Sight technology (alleged to be partially Occult in nature) caused magnetosphere anomalies that had wide-ranging and unexpected outcomes.[citation needed] The claim states that any analog technology in the affected area - VHS tapes, cassettes, broadcasts and other consumer analog equipment - became transitorily receptive to recording information that was never meant to be broadcast. [8]
No official geophysical records corroborate a magnetosphere anomaly for February 1995 in the American Midwest. [9] The NOAA has declined further communication, instead pointing to their archives as proof positive of a false claim. [10] However - one amateur Ham Radio operator and weather monitor from Wisconsin uploaded a recorded anomaly in February 1995 to his personal website WA9RAN's Ham Radio And Geomagnetic Monitor Page. the findings remain amateur and the site was subsequently shut down with no official response as to why.
Analog Anomalies
Starting approximately in 2001, a number of user-submitted analog recordings have propagated online claiming to be evidence of Project Second Sight. Common characteristics:
- Low frequency hums, bursts or pulsing sine waves.[11]
- Intermittent distorted transmissions of varying tones or indiscernible chatter as well as visual intercuts, patterns and supposed government data (disputed with no verifiable evidence).
- Some submissions appear to have unknown Glossolalia.[12]
- Timecode disruptions consistent with misconfigured timelines (alleged claim).[citation needed]
Several Audio Engineers from industry professionals to amateur hobbyists have reviewed and invesitgated the audio anomalies. Most of them attribute the disruptions to common every day artifacts associated with consumer grade equipment. [13] Time degradation, poor duplication or in-proper storage standards. However, a few have extrapolated findings that online community find convincing in support of their theory. One claiming to have found an "entity" speaking beneath the hum.
February 1995
A majority of submissions all attribute their recording dates to a single week in February 1995. Days vary and no specific time-window has been decided upon.[14] Critics of this theory use this as evidence of confirmation bias but supporters assert it as proof positive memory was altered.
"No specific date, no specific location, no hard evidence. Pure conspiracy theory."[15]
The "shared blank" phenomenon
Individuals who claim to have evidence of this event also claim to have indistinct recall or missing-time from Feburary 1995. Some even claiming to have memories of media, events or materials that never existed. [citation needed] Community members have coined this the shared blank. Experts who have waded into the discussion attribute this to normal memory attrition. No official psychological studies have been done.[16]
"Most people can't remember what they had for lunch the day before."[15]
Project Second Sight is often associated with discussions related to the Mandela Effect with some asserting that the two events are actually on and the same phenomenon.[17]
Government response
No official Governement agency has affirmed the existence of Project Second Sight and when a FOIA request was sent in by a researcher in 2012 it received the usaul Glomar response. Supporters of the theory imply this carries evidentiary weight to the projects exsistence. Others see it as routine response to conspiratorial claims the Governement is used to ignoring.[19]
Critics and Skeptics
The core element that all critics point to is lack of any official evidence:
- Primary source documents are entirely absent outside of screenshots and fragments.[20]
- Disputes of the exact dates the event unfolded.
- The unfortunate inclusion of some clearly false or misleading submission material.[21]
